PostSubject: a bit on Gunnar   Mon Oct 06, 2014 8:15 pm

i watched the fight last saturay because i really wanted gunnar to win. He is a type of fighter i would like to be. A karate stand up with great grappling. I am a judo and a karate trainee so i appreciate his style and personally, i agree with the whole minimal damage with the most effective offence mentality.
But... as i watched, i saw that he is limited in his stand up and doesnt have enough takedown tricks. there is a notion that karate is only straight punches from far away but just like almost every other martial art it includes everything. Only distance and timing are different. Nelson used only straight punches and didnt only one at a time. That is intermediate karate. i was yelling at the tv for him to use combos, to set story up and use a hook or especially an uppercut, because story keeps his chin low.
His foot work wasnt greatest either, his feet became stagnant as he got tired.
So, i hope he either just had a bad night or he learns from this and works on completing his arsenal, because with just this he wont be champ for sure

I wouldn't be to hard on Gunnar. Story was on one of those nights were he just kept coming and coming after you and full speed ahead like a diesel truck. I usually never see Story get that aggressive in his fights before. i really think that threw Gunnar off his game some. Over all i felt like that fight was just one of those fights where 8 out of 10 times i think Gunnar would have won but Story was in rare form and Gunnar was just having problems getting his rhythm.

i dont know man. gunnar looked stale. i like gunnar but that fight to me showed a whole new side to him. he cant take the pressure. story fought a good fight for sure. he was moving forward the whole fight and fought like he was fighting when he was moving up the rankings a while ago. i thought gunnar would finish story and move on to a top 10 guy but he needs much more work to be considered for that.

gunnar vs cote would be nice to watch

I didn't see the fight, but Story is just one of those fighters that can make good fighters look bad on any given night. He's not polished enough in all aspects to really be a top-tier fighter, but he's always been a tough out for almost everybody he's faced, win or lose. Remember, this is a guy who just a few years ago was on a six-fight UFC winning streak that included wins over Johnny Hendricks and Thiago Alves. And Gunnar lost by SD. So, meh.

Gunnar is a good fighter, but if anybody thought he was top-5 good at this point, you were setting yourself up for dissapointment. If Story didn't spoil it for you, somebody else would've soon.

I thought the SD was pretty weak. I thought Story dominated that fight.
